Security updates – April 2011

Warm Greetings to all of our Residents!

There are a few notices I would like for all residents to keep in mind in the upcoming weeks.

As the summer months are approaching, residents will be taking advantage of the beach. I want to advise all residents to be cautious, because the beach under the bridge leads to the road and is also used by the public. Residents should remain aware of their surroundings while on the beach and alert Security if there is someone that they are not comfortable with and we will call the police.

In addition, we are still having ongoing problems with residents not being considerate by not taking along a doggy bag and cleaning after their pets. We are asking residents to cooperate with us by being considerate in this matter. Please be advised that we are planning to install disposal stations in the coming weeks.

Please note that a Security Officer is posted at the Tambearly School entrance gate between the hours of 8am – 9am (during school days) to assist with traffic flow. We are asking parents who are dropping off children to assist us by moving their vehicle as quickly as possible after drop off or pick up. You will note that we recently imposed a 5 minute parking time limit in this area. We will be creating additional parking spaces in the near future to further ease congestion.

Finally, there is a concern that some residents are purchasing barcode stickers to give to their family members who do not reside in Sandyport. This is an unsafe practice and we will refuse applications and disable barcodes that are found to be used by non-residents.

I am glad to see that I am not alone. I can’t understand why you chose to remove those particular speed bumps around Sandyport Drive. You have removed the one in front of my house and the following one causing everyone to speed up from the round-a-bout all the way to the Tambearly entrance.

Well you were successful in creating a faster route and have also put my children in danger as well as many others. Many times it is as simple as a ball rolling across the road that can cause the children to act impulsively and dart across to retrieve it. It only takes a split second.

I can understand the frustrations for those who may live on the cays or perhaps don’t have any young children to be concerned about but the last time I checked we call ourselves a community, which is people working together to acomplish the uplift of the whole. Please rethink your decisions and consider the safety of our children. At least replace the speed bump just before Kingfisher.

Over the past six years I have seen some major improvements throughout Sandyport and I feel that you will again make the right decision in finding a way to meet everyones needs. I am very proud to be a Sanyport resident and would just like to thank you for all of your efforts in making this a beautiful and safe place to live.

Sincerly,

Glad to hear the speed bumps by the park are going back in…..that was also a concern of mine. I have a very active 2 year old and an equally active 6 year old to worry about.

May I endorse all the comments made so far regarding the speed bumps. As a father of two little ones I am very worried that people are now able to drive faster around Sandyport. Frankly I think we need more bumps and not less. I do think that the Board has made great progres in a number of areas and thank them for their hard work but may I please ask that the speed bumps by the park and all corners be replaced.

Many thanks

Reading R. Maurizio’s comment I have to agree. As someone who walks around the Sandyport area at all hours of the day every day I find it deeply disturbing how fast people drive through here. While walking I’ve nearly been hit several times, mostly on the corners, because people are driving too fast to see me. There’s a look of shock on driver’s faces when they see someone at the side of the road and quite often they either slam on their brakes or swerve into the other side of the road – now imagine I’m a child and still learning about staying at the side of the road, or a child who’s wobbly on their bike. What’s even more disturbing to me is that many of the people speeding through the area have children themselves. All of the work trucks that come through here are equally as bad – even worst because they’re bigger.

Removing speed bumps so people can drive faster is quite frankly, a horrible idea. People drive through here fast enough as it is and by removing the speed bumps you’re giving the okay to drive faster. If I remember correctly there was just a posting reminding drivers to stick to the speed limit and the removal of the bumps would appear to be counter-productive. As someone who drives the speed limit (15mph), the amount needed to slow down to go over the bumps is insignificant and not worth removing them. It’s those who are driving over the speed limit who are affected.

I really don’t think that saving 1 minute, if that, is worth risking not only our lives, but our children’s lives. If the streets weren’t windy, narrow, full of blind spots, and covered with shrubbery, it would be a different story. But that’s not the case.

A few days ago my wife and I were at the park and noticed that construction crews were removing the speed bump directly to the north of the park. At the time, we had no concerns and just figured that there was some type of repair being done. Since that time I have been told that many speed bumps are being permanatly removed because people were complaining about not being able to get around the complex fast enough. WHAT? That is the very purpose of the speed bumps, is it not? There are many families with small children that live here. To remove a speed bump near a park is even more disturbing. If the board decided on their own to remove speed bumps, did any thought go into wich ones to remove? I have even noticed speed bumps being removed in blind curves. I ask that the board reconsider this action and at least replace the speed bump near the park and the blind curves. Please think about the children and not the people wanting to be able to drive faster.

Thank you

Thank you so much for this comment. I am happy to announce that we are placing the speed bump back near the playground. The board is having their next meeting in June and will be reviewing the speed bump concerns then. Thank you
